With a 2012 ECMA for Pop Recording of the Year for her debut album, Under Your Skin, a multitude of showcases in New York City, Toronto and Memphis, Ria Mae is out on the road promoting her new single “Leaving Today” and is poised for her return to Halifax at the Company House this Saturday night.
A pop sound with a rough around the edges attitude, “Leaving Today” was produced with another Halifax heavyweight, Classified and has an Alanis Morissette feel. It’s got that poppy gloss you’d expect from a radio single but still offers Mae’s attitude.“Being a touring musician is a really weird thing,” says Mae. “You learn to adapt to a lot of different situations. Nothing is the same day to day. Then there’s the part where you record songs and spill your heart out for strangers to hear. The whole thing is really odd.”
Her touring schedule brings her to the Maritimes Thursday (Saint John) and Charlottetown on Friday before she winds it all up here at home. “I’m really excited for that one (Halifax). I’ll be playing at the Company House. I’ve played there lots in the past but it’s been awhile,” says the singer.
